UPDATE: Registration now closed
NSRLP is pleased to offer the first ever School for Family Litigants! This free 12-week online program (generously funded by a grant from the Department of Justice) will give Canadian self-represented litigants with family law matters (divorce, custody, etc.) the tools to help them navigate the justice system on their own.
Running weekly on Wednesdays, January 19 to April 6, 2022 (12pm to 1:30pm EST), the program will cover, among other topics:
- Basics of the family law system, including precedent
- Legal research using CanLII
- Procedures around legal paperwork
- Identifying steps in the process, including different hearing types
- Pursuing settlement options
- Getting ready for trial
- Self-care and managing emotions
Please note that this program will not provide legal advice or coaching, or answer questions on the specifics of your case, and NSRLP cannot guarantee success in your legal matter. The course instead offers opportunities to learn information and strategies that will help you to understand and navigate the family law system.
Sessions will be led by NSRLP staff and a variety of family law experts, and will be based on our practical “primers” for SRLs, as well as other applicable resources. At the end of the course, each student will receive a certificate of completion signed by Dr. Julie Macfarlane, founder of the NSRLP. The program is open to family SRLs from across Canada, as the content is not province/territory-specific.
We are blown away by the incredible response to this program – registration filled up in under 2 hours! We apologize to anyone hoping to secure a spot who was not able to. We will be running this program again in the fall of 2022, at the very least. We hope very much to offer it much more in the future.
Follow NSRLP on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for more information on the School for Family Litigants.
Hello,
I just tried to register for the 12 week course but there is no such course after hitting the Register button.
Thanks,
Karin Turkington
Hi Karin, we’re so so sorry, we were experiencing tech difficulties with Eventbrite, but it should be resolved now. Please try again! Thank you for bearing with us!
Respectfully
So many of us need help navigating our “Access2Justice”
In our Canada “Pay2Play” justice System
In our Canada “Pay4Justice” developed by Lawyers to Maximize Profits
Where to more you pay the better Lawyer you get and better Justice
Respectfully
Why can you not allow your excluded limited numbers in our Canada funded program to help us all
Watch as observers to the sessions
Respectfully this would not in any way upset your program but would allow us all to watch and gain the help you can offer
Appreciate feed back
Hello, because this is the first time, ever, that we are running this program, we are keeping it limited, as we work out the kinks and develop the best possible version of the program – this first run is essentially a pilot. It is also in the requirements of our grant that the program be interactive, and it is not possible for the class to be interactive for all if we have unlimited observers. We will be running the program again in fall of 2022, and figuring out ways to make the program available to a wider group of participants. Thank you for your feedback.
Is there a mailing list or waitlist I can sign up for so I can be notified when the next classes open up? I would be very interested in taking this program in the fall! (or sooner)
Hello thank you for your interest! If you join our newsletter mailing list you will receive information about future sessions.
Does this HAVE to be an interactive class? Why can’t it go on YouTube so the rest of us get a chance to learn – especially those of us who are single parents, who can’t just show up for a scheduled class, or have three months to spend on these classes! I’m very frustrated by the way you rolled this out, and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
We will be looking at other ways to deliver this material. Please bear with us, this is the first time we are running the course, we are learning as we go, and that is one of the reasons it is important for this round in particular to keep the number of students lower. Having said that, yes, we feel that an interactive component is important, in order for this to actually be a “school” experience, which is the point of this project. (An interactive component is also one of the requirements of our funding for this project.) One way to access a lot of the material in the class, if you are not interested in a class/course experience, is read our Primers for SRLs, and to check out our videos.
