Ashley Haines reports on substantial and punitive costs awards against self-represented litigants from our growing database.

I have had my Contitutional rights violated by the judges.
After a 5 year litigation period and a five day trial, the judge awarded the Plaintiff SRL, 20K in costs.
This litigant has abused my husband and I for twenty years by kidnapping his kids, assaulting me, getting unlimited and unending adult support for adults that we didn’t know where they were, if they were alive and certainly had no access to.
I started posting on my web page against her. She filed for defamation. She won. We lost. It was an unconstitutional order that violated our freedom of speech. I told the truth about the perpetrator.
I couldn’t appeal. The cost was inaccessible. Just to get transcripts and reprints etc would cost $10K.
The lawyers said they would have to charge 50K to Appeal.
NO ACCESS TO JUSTICE. SPOUSE DIED.
I am wondering if there are any precedents for SRLs including the cost of Independent Legal Advice they received in their Bill of Costs when costs are awarded to them. I feel like this is a reasonable and necessary disbursement for me in an analogous way to the way that a law firm can charge in their Bill of Costs for courier fees and taxes that they incur but I do not because I am a SRL. I have a hard time finding cost assessment hearing orders on CANLII to see if my reasoning has precedent. Thanks for any ideas.

off the top of my head i cant remember where i saw it but it may have been in the rules (ab rules of court) if i remember i will come back and write it for u, but just 2 days ago i read somewhere that srl’s r entitled to a percentage of schedule c. (which i believe is the chart or list of recoverable costs for litigation etc) good luck.
