Thank you, Dr. Julie Macfarlane, for respecting self-represented litigants and explaining to your legal colleagues that self-representation is not a choice but a financial necessity for ordinary consumers. Especially in Toronto where hourly fees are sky-high and huge retainers are required. How can an ordinary working people with good jobs pay $600- $750 PER HOUR for experienced litigators? This does not even include the cost of multiple motions or other delays, or the technical experts one needs for hearings such as the License Appeal Tribunal. Lawyers have priced themselves out of a major middle class market, and created a nightmare of stress for ordinary consumers and the courts.
