NSRLP CanLII Primer V1 English

NSRLP CanLII Primer V1 French

The CanLll Primer: Legal Research Principles and CanLII Navigation for Self-Represented Litigants is the result of innumerable hours of research and drafting by NSRLP Research Assistant Tamara Thomas, who worked with Julie to develop the Primer. Tamara says this about what she learned from the experience, and what motivated her to spend so much time and passion on this project.

“The CanLII Primer aims to help SRLs develop a basic understanding of how to operate CanLII in a straightforward and effective way. CanLII is a wonderful resource because it is open to anyone to use – no fees, no commitments – but it can also be frustrating to operate. Of course, I say that coming from the privileged position of having taken classes specifically on legal research and writing in law school…

I realized fairly quickly into this process – and I got a really good appreciation of this as a result of creating the Primer – that the legal system is one created by and dependent upon inaccessible and unintuitive language, and trying to access and understand the legal research process without properly understanding that language throws up yet another barrier to SRLs. Writing the Primer required that I completely deconstruct everything that I knew in a way that we are not taught in law school. ”How do I explain this in a way someone without a legal education can understand?’ ‘What does this term mean in every day language?’ ‘What do I need to first explain before I can explain what this other term means?’ Every question gave birth to five more, and the hardest part was knowing when and where to stop.

It was a challenging task – but if the CanLII Primer can help even just one person navigate the legal research process with a bit more ease, if it can take away even just a little of the stress that SRLs experience when going through the legal process…well, then it has done its job. And that makes it all worthwhile.”

This cannot come early enough …Thank you … some of us laypeople are going through the ordeal of navigating through the process and its technicalities out of need and will never see the retribution that the legal community can aspire to ….by ” going to law school “

  3. I don’t really know what this is all about but one thing I’m going to say,we sure got one corrupt justice system kicking an innocent man out of his own house for other people wrongdoing and putting an innocent man in jail for three weeks involved in this corruption are lawyers RCMP.mimister of Justice Name it there all corrupt they I mean the whole system is design for the rich only, they wanted me to give them my small pension which I need to live on,I’m saying that it’s a democracy for the rich, and a crime against humanaty what they are doing to some of the poor people, while our politicians are getting away with stealing thousands of dollars or should I say there borrowing it.
I’m am seeking justice for what these crooked judges are doing to the poor, another thing is,some crimes the seen should be investagated before the trial not by the RCMP since they been getting away with murder, and having the tappers money to find innocent people
guilty simply by being a bunch of lyers yes that what I mean, they lie do anything to get away with there wrong doing they broke in my house four times I could have been exuacuted it would have been all covered up,they should be force to wear cameras and voices recorders to stop the RCMP especially,I say there members of what I call the lyres club ,something he got to be done to stop these kind of crime by our not so great Justice system and who gives these judges all these powers is just as guilty of the whole system, and there should be jurors in the courtroom at all times to see that the judges and crown Prosecuter don’t pull any fast ones like happen to me,something has to be done,I call it not the justice system but the corrupt justice system for some that all they care about is making themselfs rich,of the avails off the poor, the RCMP control the press and the media,I call this a dictatorship nothing else,I was robbed of about 100,000$ and tortured, harrases and bullied and tortured,by the whole system, and if they know you got no money they say that your crazy,I think they all need to see a phyciatriast,if I got it spelled right, put a stop of what there doing to the poor.
